Just like Subbuteo, a Celluloid figure was introduced as an additional option around 1949-50. This was done to match Subbuteo to provide a an option that was a bit more durable… Newfooty was Again playing catch up as Subbuteo had brought there Celluloid Players a year or so earlier this was a sign of things to come for New Footy always one step behind…
Unlike Subbuteo, these were printed onto a transparent celluloid, making the action poses look all the more striking.
This was the first version of 2 Celluloid Figure types used by New footy and this first one coincided with the new “Plastic balancing Discs” that was brought out a year before in 1948… and I assumed they would Generally appear on them but of course as with the case New Footy nothing is simple, as you will see below They do also appear on the later One Piece base that you commonly see the Later Numbered teams on… I believe this was the case of using up the old stock of figures up when the old bases were used up… (That’s my theory anyway) Thanks to Simon Goodman Photo’s Shows my original assumption was false 🙂
These figures didn’t have numbers on the backs and came with different illustrations to what came after and different “Action” Poses… The earlier figure had a small tag that fitted through a hole in the balancing disc.
As throughout the whole of the New footy Section nothing was simple so of course anyone with more info let me know 🙂 ALSO this page is more dedicated to the figure of course if you have any that are on a different base type than below (i.e one on the Balancing disc rather than a one piece or vice-versa then i want to catalogue so send in some pics:))
