Lightweights Every Variation Possible…
The end of the Original Reference Range… The end of nearly 50 years of continual additions to the range came to and end at Ref 830 as from Hasbro’s Acquisition of the Subbuteo Brand in 1996 meant a new numbering System to go with the new base for any new team released… They kept on selling the older teams on the old numbering with a 63 in front. There is a section on that in the Hasbro section… What i must say there was nothing wrong with the old one but they seemed to think so…
The Range was slowly shrinking and this would be the last time they strayed away from the big leagues… Minus the Black box range (I don’t see that as mainstream attempt at the Main Toy market)… Subbuteo has not catered directly for lower league teams since… another casualty of the Hasbro Take over… They would Focus on the Premier League the most with a few other big teams and National teams… To many this was were “Real” Subbuteo Died and although it carried on till 2000 you have to agree… although the Hasbro Base was far more Beginner friendly…
Another thing that ended in 1996 was Parodis distributing Relationship with Subbuteo… Hasbro would take it all In house and distribute the game themselves… They would go off and create Zeugo as a Response in 1997 and would briefly gain rights in 2002 to make Subbuteo (Black box range) when the Hasbro Cancelled Subbuteo in 2000/01 before losing them again in 2005… They have since Grown Zeugo into a big player in the Hobby and many players first choice with…
The biggest debate with this small section is the Last team Ref 830 is up to debate whether it actually exists with some collectors doubting the existence of the team… Ref 829 pops up a lot and is ranked Common by Mingardo’s Rarity guide (1/6) but 830 doesn’t pop up at all, Mingardo rates this as a “forget it! ” a 6/6 . I’ve only ever seen a fake that popped up on Facebook and was quickly called out for being a fake with someone adding white marker to the team… Does it exist or doesn’t it? i’ve used the picture from the Lw book… Im not confirming its existence or not but still needs documenting and thats the must trustworthy image we got? it needs documenting either way…
The last few numbers are far easier to find on Hasbro bases does this prove that Hasbro bases were starting to come in before Hasbro’s takeover… ?
Enjoy the Last Lw References… and the Last of the original numbering system…
