The classic heavyweight figure debuted in 1967, swiftly replacing the previous short-sleeved player type. It inherited a range of fifty-two teams and the 1966 World Cup range. Designed by Charles Stadden, this figure remains extremely popular with collectors. Hand-painted on colorful bases, this attractive figure deserves significant credit for Subbuteo’s success.
Subbuteo only replaced the heavyweight figure when machine-printed teams became increasingly necessary due to the complexity of modern kits. Initially, there was an unsuccessful attempt to replace it with the Zombie Figure in the late seventies. Ultimately, it was fully replaced by the lightweight figure in 1981. Therefore, the heavyweight figure remained in use until the lightweight figure gained traction in 1981.
